ESPN-DraftKings Partnership After Penn Exit
This episode details the early termination of the online sports betting partnership between ESPN and PENN Entertainment, which operated the ESPN Bet platform, due to its failure to meet market share targets. This abrupt ending of the expensive, ten-year deal, signed in 2023, results in PENN Entertainment rebranding its sportsbook app as theScore Bet by December 1, 2025, while retaining nearly three million user accounts. Simultaneously, ESPN announced a new multi-year agreement with DraftKings to become the network's exclusive official sportsbook and odds provider, allowing DraftKings to integrate its products across ESPN’s platforms. The termination of the PENN deal resulted in a massive $825 million non-cash write-down for the casino operator and saw its stock decline, while DraftKings expressed confidence that its new, more robust partnership with ESPN would succeed where its predecessor failed.
